AOA Board of Trustees Opposes Adding 'M.D. Option' at TCOM
The AOA's Board of Trustees found no compelling rationale that TCOM must become an M.D. granting school in order to become a top research school.  In fact, in 2002, the osteopathic medical profession established the Osteopathic Research Center (ORC) at UNTHSC because of TCOM's leadership in research.

In Our Opinion.....Offering an MD degree at UNT/HSC is wrong because it is unnecessary.
Offering an MD degree at UNT/HSC is wrong because it is harmful to TCOM and our community.
It is wrong to offer an MD degree at UNT/HSC because it institutionalizes professional discrimination and prejudice.
It is also wrong to offer an MD degree at UNT/HSC because of the manner in which the decision making process is being conducted.

The Board of Governors of the American Osteopathic College of Pathologists opposes MD option at TCOM.

Dear Dr. Ransom

The Board of Governors of the American Osteopathic College of Pathologists, Inc. strongly opposes the proposal to create an MD option at the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine (TCOM). Consideration of this option will ultimately weaken the strength and leadership of the osteopathic profession in Texas, as well as across the country.

We do not believe that a valid reason or benefit exists in creating a second medical degree option at the UNTHSC. We hope that you completely evaluate the consequences of such a major decision that will impact the future of the osteopathic profession.

Sincerely,
Laura Michael, DO
President

EDWARD A. LUKE, JR., D.O.
To the UNT Board Members,

I am writing out of my concern over the Proposal to create an MD degree option at the UNTHSC.
I may have some unique experiences that have shaped my view regarding this Proposal. I grew up in Fort Worth. My father was Edward Luke, Sr., M.D. I graduated from TCOM in the class of 1981. While in school I was the Class President for 2 years. I was a previous President of the Alumni Association. In my residency I spent 2 years at Michigan State University in a Psychiatric residency. I served on the faculty of TCOM for 3 ½ years before opening my private practice here in Fort Worth for 8 years. I served as the Chief Psychiatrist for Geriatrics at the North Texas State Hospital during 10 ½ years I was on their staff.
